Herbal Therapy

Herbal Therapy is an essential part of whole health therapy and a great complement to acupuncture, though in some cases herbal therapy can be used alone to treat a disease process. Herbal therapy dates back over 4000 years, but today herbs are prepared with the benefits of modern technology to ensure safety and ease of use.

Herbal therapy is the use of plants or plant extracts with active therapeutic properties for medicinal purposes. Each herb has a different effect on the body based on its properties (warming, cooling, sour, bitter). For example, Chamomile and lavender are calming, and eucalyptus helps clear nasal passages. Herbal formulas, or a combination of several individual herbs, are used to treat a specific pattern of disease based on a TCVM and conventional diagnosis.

Herbal formulas may produce improved outcomes and fewer side effects than conventional pharmaceutical products. Herbal therapies can be used for almost all conditions, including epilepsy, chronic kidney failure, chronic lameness, hormonal disorders, behavioral disorders, allergic skin disease, liver failure and inflammatory bowel disease. Other herbs may simply support the normal function of healthy organs.

It is important that your pet have working diagnosis and diagnostic information gathered from your primary veterinarian prior to the administration of herbal therapy. When prescribed and used correctly, herbal formulas are an all-natural and generally safe method of treatment for a wide variety of diseases. At Whole Health we will work with you to try and achieve your goals for treatment and medication for your pet. We often use herbal formulas in conjunction with conventional medication for the most benefit to your pet. We also use herbal formulas for pets that cannot tolerate conventional treatment. We will never take a pet off their current medical treatment without a thorough discussion with you and your primary veterinarian.
